Heliodon
"A heliodon is a device that simulates the angle at which sunbeams strike a physical model of a building or landscape. All heliodons consist of one or more light sources and a mechanism to support the model and to rotate it through one to three axes."
Sun simulator Heliodon
"The Sun Simulator heliodon is conceptually clear because it imitates our everyday experience of the sun passing across the sky-dome, and the model being fixed on a horizontal ground plane. It is a large device usually greater than 10 ft (3 m) in diameter that cannot be easily moved. Although it is built for a particular latitude, the model support table can be tilted plus or minus 5 degrees yielding a 10 degree latitude range without loss of clarity."
Sun Emulator Heliodon
"The Sun Emulator heliodon is an intuitive and conceptually clear heliodon. It is completely manufactured in a factory and only needs to be plugged in when it is unpacked. Its footprint is about 6 x 6 ft (2 x 2 m), and it can be rolled around on its own casters. It was designed to fit through a standard door frame. The seven rings that represent the sunpaths for the 21st day of each of the months can be rotated to simulate the time of day."
Table-top Heliodon
"The table top heliodon consists of a model support device that can rotate and tilt a model, a clip-on lamp, and a ribbon mounted on a door. The model support device is about 12 in. square (30 cm square) and rests on a conventional table or desk."
Solar Geometry Demonstration Heliodon
"The Solar Geometry Demonstration Heliodon was developed because not every architecture school, energy center, or other teaching facility has the space and or money for excellent heliodons like the Sun Simulator or Sun Emulator that can both test models as well as teach solar geometry and solar strategies. Although, the very inexpensive and small Table-top Heliodon is very good for testing models, it is not good for teaching solar geometry and solar strategies. Essentially, the Solar Geometry Demonstration Heliodon is a small and very inexpensive version of the Sun Emulator."
Robotic heliodon with fixed light source (Tulip Heliodon)
"Tulip is an automated heliodon, where the light moves around the fixed scale model. It is ideal for integration on our dome artificial skies or to be used stand alone for presentation purposes and collaborative design on scale model."
